Brewing innovation: Mark Goodman of Boyer Coffee Company

Editor’s note: In our new Voice of Small Business series, we highlight a handful of the more than 19,000 business leaders that represent the best of the Vistage community.

Mark Goodman recalls his time as the Head of Strategy for McDonald’s Corporation as a “baptism by fire and coffee.” While there, he helped to completely re-architect and re-launch the company’s coffee program for more than 13,000 U.S. stores.

After stints with Wal-Mart and MG Capital Group, Vistage member Goodman has come full circle, and is back in the coffee business. In January 2013 he started his position as Chairman and CEO of the “small but mighty” Boyer Coffee Company and has already made moves to bolster the company’s growth.

By investing in the well-performing aspects of the company and de-vesting in the poorly performing parts, he’s been able plot the company on a path to growth in the mid-level coffee industry.

Using the traditional five P’s – people, price, place, profit and promotion – he has created new opportunities to position the company at a place for growth. In July 2014, Goodman secured a partnership with Frontier Airlines to be the coffee provider for the airline. That means their product (poured in more than a million co-branded cups) is being placed and promoted in 70 U.S. cities and 10 international countries. Although large in scale, this partnership has also shifted the focus on engaging Boyer’s team of people.
