Executives are often under pressure to deliver bold results. To do so, leaders must set goals that guide strategic decision-making and align organization-wide efforts to achieve impactful outcomes.

Vistage Master Chair Tom Cuthbert believes an effective goal-setting process that leads to success includes six core elements:

  1. Working on goals with peers.
  2. Making goals visible.
  3. Creating an environment of accountability.
  4. Celebrating wins.
  5. Emphasizing the momentary impact of goals.
  6. Valuing trajectory over achievement.

“Having a community of peers around you that are working on similar issues makes a big difference,” he said. “Leaders need accountability and our community delivers that.”

Here, Cuthbert explains how he approaches goal setting with members to create achievable, powerful goals.
